Visto che la stragrande maggioranza delle distillerie di single malt scozzese prende il nome dai punti di riferimento geografici specifici in cui sono state costruite, la maggior parte dei marchi di whisky scozzese ha radice nel gaelico scozzese e racconta il paesaggio circostante.
Il prefisso più diffuso nel whisky scozzese è “Glen“, che in gaelico significa “valle” . Storicamente, le distillerie necessitavano di un approvvigionamento massiccio e continuo di acqua dolce e pura e dell’accesso a campi d’orzo nelle vicinanze, entrambi elementi naturalmente presenti nelle valli fluviali scozzesi. Altri prefissi comuni sono Ard (piccolo), Auch (campo), Ben (promontorio), Craig (collina rocciosa), Dhu (nero), Mor (grande).
